About Locations

Dave Phinney, the owner and winemaker at Locations, created the company as a way to produce wines that represent countries and locations around the world. In order to do so, he traveled the globe and visited top vineyards to secure the very best grapes from each region. The ultimate goal of Locations is to capture the terroirs that result in high-quality wines and express a sense of place through the grapes used. They look for old-vine vineyards with lower yields in hopes of bringing out the best of a regions viticulture tradition. Many of the vineyards that source grapes to Locations are located in highly-regarded appellations throughout Europe and wine hotspots in other countries. Locations wines allow for a wider audience to experience wines from the most renowned regions at a reasonable price.

About the Owner and Wine

Dave was originally introduced to winemaking in 1995 during a trip to Florence. His curiosity led him to a job as a harvest worker with Robert Mondavi in 1997. He then decided to pursue his passion for wines and created his own wine brand in 1998 using only two tons of Zinfandel. Over the next 10 years, he spent his time making wine for himself and others and turned multiple businesses into internationally-known wine brands. With Locations, he decided to travel to top wine-producing countries to create wines that define specific cultures and traditions. He takes a simplistic approach to winemaking and blends grapes across appellations to create new expressions of regional wines. This project has allowed him to express his knowledge and creativity through the winemaking process.

Wines

The Locations E-2 Spanish Red Wine was created from a blend of several grapes, including Grenache from Priorat, Tempranillo from Rioja, along with Carignan from Ribera del Duero and Carinyena. It was aged in barrels for 10 months before bottling. This red displays prominent aromas of black fruit combined with white flowers, forest floor, and kirsch. It’s full-bodied with a lush texture and stunning depth. Next, the Locations French Red Wine contains a blend of Syrah from the Rhone Valley, Grenache from the Roussillon, and multiple Bordeaux varieties. It was barrel-aged for 10 months after being fermented in oak vats. The result is a deep ruby color with notes of black currants, licorice, and camphor. This is a full-bodied red with bold freshness. It’s perfect now but will age well over the next five years.

The Locations I-2 Italian Red Wine is made with Barbera from Piedmont, Nero d’Avola and Negroamaro from Puglia, and a small amount of Sangiovese from Tuscany. It was barrel-aged for 10 months before bottling. This is a pleasantly acidic wine with notes of licorice, wild herbs, black olives, black currants, tomato skins, and cherries. Finally, the Locations Argentinian Red Wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. It displays notes of plums, red currants, black cherries, and fall spice. The subtle tannins, perfect integration of flavors, and long finish make this a well-balanced red. In fact, it was a Platinum Award winner at the Sommelier Challenge International Wine Competition in 2016.
