We went to bid on some of the most precious wines in the world. We left with something far more valuable—and important.

The first time we met the New York Knicks’ Josh Hart was in July 2019, at Napa Valley’s WineaPAWlooza auction. We bonded with him over Left Bank Bordeaux, and were struck by how knowledgeable and curious he was about wine, which he’d been turned on to by his former teammate LeBron James.

We kept in close touch, and later that year, we had a kickoff dinner with Josh and his friends prior to the first game of the NBA season. Safe to say we became fast friends with Josh—and that sparked the collaboration that led to this world-class Cabernet.

For the 2021 Bank Shot Cabernet Sauvignon, we paired Josh up with Maayan Koschitzky, with whom Wine Access members are very familiar. Maayan is the prodigious talent who serves as Director of Winemaking for Philippe Melka’s Atelier Melka, in addition to being the key player behind La Pelle and Pas de Cheval.

Needless to say, Maayan has some of the best vineyard connections in all of Napa Valley, and for this wine, he tapped vineyards in St. Helena, Howell Mountain, and Oakville in the gorgeous 2021 vintage. These are the same sites that Maayan also uses to craft $250 single-vineyard wines, and it shows through in the glass.

The result, behind a label that pays homage to Bordeaux, is a serious, cellarworthy Cabernet boasting aromas of black raspberries, cherries, vanilla bean, chocolate, and currants. It’s full-bodied yet beautifully balanced, and deserves a spot in any collection, whether it belongs to an NBA star or everyday wine lover.
