Fisher Vineyards is an absolute jewel of a winery, tucked into the hills of the Mayacamas range on the western flanks of Spring Mountain. Founded in 1973 by Fred and Juelle Fisher, the winery maintains a sense of tradition and history even today. Approaching the Turnbull-designed facility — built with timber milled from trees grown on the property — feels like driving back into another era.

The home estate on Spring Mountain covers about 100 acres, 30 of which are planted. Aspects and exposures vary throughout the vineyard. The Whitney’s Vineyard Chardonnay, Wedding Vineyard Cabernet, and Mountain Estate Cabernet and Chardonnay are all grown here. The Fishers’ Napa estate, a magnificent 57-acre vineyard, located just one mile south of Calistoga, produces the Coach Insignia, Cameron, Lamb, and RCF Vineyard wines.

Over the years, a stellar cast of winemakers, including Chuck Ortman, David Abreu, Paul Hobbs, Mia Klein, and Aaron Pott, has guided the estate, maintaining a delicate approach which balances tradition with evolution of style.

Today, the winery is run by the next generation of Fishers (though Fred and Juelle remain in involved). Their daughter Cameron handles sales and marketing, their son Robert is the general manager, and their daughter Whitney (who is married to Nile Zacherle, winemaker at David Arthur and Montagna) is winemaker.

The wines are classically structured, with the top red cuvées seeing ample new oak that, somehow, is almost always totally integrated into the wines. They display well-knit focus and are powerful yet balanced, slightly old-school in nature, refreshingly detailed, precise, and age-worthy.

This is a winery at the top of its game, with a future that looks sound, solid, and poised for even greater success.
