About Anselmi
Roberto Anselmi was once one of the most famous of all Soave producers, but, while his fame endures, his wines are no longer laacbeled Soave. His story, however, begins in the 1920s with his grandfather, who began the family tradition of winemaking. During the Second World War, the economic crisis hit the Anselmis hard; Roberto's grandfather was forced to sell his vineyards, leaving the family with a winery but no vines. Roberto's father made the most of the situation, continuing to make wine from grapes purchased from his neighbors. It was Roberto's dream, however, to buy back the lost vineyards and make his own wines, from start to finish. The road to success was bumpy, however, and as he began to buy back land and make wine, new rules regarding the appellation system put a damper on his operation. Anselmi disagreed with the stipulations, arguing that they discouraged ambition and the production of high-quality wines, so he jettisoned the designation in 2000. Since then, his wines have simply been labeled IGT Veneto. Made primarily with the Garganega grape, these wines are notably dense and concentrated. The San Vincenzo bottling is a perennial value and there's also a particularly rich and viscous dessert bottling.
