2018 Clos Pegase Bordeaux Red Blend Napa Valley 750 ml
Clos Pegase is one of Napa’s historic names. They’ve got an iconic winery, three prime vineyards, and a long history of exceptional Cabernet—and they’re making the best wines in their history right now, like their Cabernet-based 2018 Bordeaux Red blend. If it were available at the winery today, this supple, fruit-driven red would set you back $110. We negotiated a discount so deep that our accounting department thought there must have been an error on the invoice. Needless to say, this is by far the best price in the country—the only one, in fact—and it gets even better on three or more bottles.

When Winemaker, Vineyard, and Vintage All Align
Very few wineries making Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa are able to source entirely from estate vineyards.
But very few wineries in Napa have been around for 40 years.
Clos Pegase was able to buy their three primo vineyards long before Napa’s modern gold rush, giving them the ability to deliver high-quality, estate-grown Cabernet for significantly less than their peers. In a vintage Wine Spectator rated 99 points, they had a stunning vintage to work with—a year that will challenge the best of the century thus far—as well as the most talented winemaker in their history: Robin Akhurst.
Robin got his start working for the legendary Domaine Leflaive in Burgundy and Two Hands in Australia’s Barossa Valley, before a connection led him to a coveted position working under Thomas Rivers Brown. From there, he spent four years running a custom-crush project for Nils Venge, the Napa legend dubbed “The King of Cabernet”—and the first person in California to earn a perfect score from Robert Parker.
“The Bordeaux Blend is not made every year,” Akhurst told us. “We just do it when we have the quality and quantity of fruit to make an exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Six years of aging has added to the complexity and deliciousness.”
Akhurst harnessed the warmth of the year to produce a bold bottle that’s packed with blueberries, black cherries, and plums, layered with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, and a touch of fresh violets. This wine exhibits classic Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon structure, with the suppleness and complexity of Petite Sirah from the Juliana Vineyard in Pope Valley. It’s built for the cellar but absolutely delicious now.
