About Trio Infernal

Trio Infernal, set on old vines in the Spanish Catalan appellation of Priorat, is the brainchild of three of the Rhone Valley's most talented producers: Jean-Michel Gerin (Cote Rotie), Peter Fischer (Coteaux D'Aix) and Laurent Combier (Crozes Hermitage). The three winemakers -- described as the 'infernal trio' by the locals -- got together in 2000 to make wine on 50 acres of rugged, mineral rich terrain. They quickly terraced the slopes, planting them with old-vine Carignan and Grenache, and soon reaped their reward. Only six years later, the trio's 2004 Cuvee No. 2/3 was named Best Spanish Wine of the Year by Spain's leading newspaper. This was, and is a hugely concentrated, ancient vine bottling made entirely from Carignan. But, as they say, the whole is only as good as its parts. The three other wines in the Infernal portfolio are Cuvee No. 1/3, a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Carignan, rich and Rhone-like in its intensity and precision, No. 0/3, a 50-50 blend of White Grenache and Macabeo, and finally, Riu, a younger vine bottling of Carignan, Syrah, and Grenache -- lively, fruit forward and fresh.
