Chateau Margaux Facts

The history of Chateau Margaux wine dates back nearly 1,000 years. Regarding legendary wines, Chateau Margaux should instantly come to mind.  Originally known as La Mothe de Margaux, Chateau Margaux is a wine estate that specializes in Bordeaux wine and is amongst the only four wines to attain the status of Premier Cru in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. During those times the estate was designated for use by royalty, as vineyards were not yet planted. 

La Mothe de Margaux had various owners of noble birth. The estate would only start producing wine under the management of the Lestonnac family from 1572 to 1582. The Chateau Margaux vineyards would not be fully developed until the 1600's under the management of the d 'Auledes family.

Varietals Produced at Chateau Margaux

It was only because of the legendary quality of the wine that the estate adopted the name of the appellation. Historically, Chateau Margaux is the only Bordeaux wine to adopt the name of the appellation from where it resides.

Also produced at the estate a second wine, Pavillion Rouge du Chateau Margaux, a third wine, Margaux de Chateau Margaux as well as a dry white called Pavillion Blanc du Chateau Margaux.

When it comes to annual output, Chateau Margaux produces 12,000 cases per year, Pavillion Rouge du Chateau Margaux 16,000 cases per years and Pavillion Blanc du Chateau Margaux 1,600 cases per year. Today, a bottle of Chateau Margaux averages at $639.
