Wines to Pair with Pizza & Wings

It’s estimated that the US loses $4 billion in productivity due to the post-Super Bowl, um, we’ll say absenteeism. There’s a movement afoot to make the Monday after the big game a holiday, but until that day comes, we say don’t let that productivity perish in vain.

The best way to do that is by savoring every sip we take on Super Bowl Sunday—which means having perfect pairings at the ready.

Unless you’ve got big money riding on the coin toss (we take home team, heads every year) the most exciting pre-game moment comes when you’re assessing the spread—and we consider any party without pizza AND wings a Leon Lett-level fumble... We’ll take an icy German Riesling to cool off the Frank’s Red Hot on the wings, and while we’ll be happy to see a great NY-style pie on the table, we’ll be thrilled if there’s a Tuscan or Argentine red somewhere in the room. Be sure to get a good amount of food in your belly early: As the head coaches are likely telling the teams in the locker rooms, this is gonna be a long day.

Singing from the Southern-Fried Heart

2018 Weingut Von Winning Winnings Riesling Pfalz Germany

Hands-down one of the most drinkable wines on planet Earth, folks in the industry love this wine because for a couple of bucks you can have it all. Thirst-quenching, energetic, food-friendly deliciousness.

Tasting Note: Pale straw color with golden and silver highlights. The nose is explosive with citrus notes of lime, lemon, and yellow grapefruit, as well as white flowers and nectarine. The palate is lifted, elegant, and vibrant with plenty of wet stones, salty minerals, and citrus zest. Clean and refined, with a lushness to the palate that balances the dry, slightly petrol side of Riesling with the faintest notion of sweetness. The wine dazzles on the finish while it vacillates between clean and off-dry to medium-dry, with a kiss of sweetness. Drink now - 2025.

A Favorite Tuscan Bargain Shoulders into Top-100 Territory

2017 Petra Zingari Toscana Rosso IGT

A Wine Access favorite, this “sumptuous and inviting” Maremma classic was the highest-ranked value red on Wine Spectator’s 2019 Top 100 at 93 points.

Tasting Note: Opaque core with a ruby rim. A unique Tuscan comprised of equal parts Merlot, Sangiovese, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. Fruit aromas of crushed cherries and fresh plum fruit, and a palate of dried cherries, currants, tilled earth, and savory herbs. A cleansing mineral note runs through the wine with a hint of balsamic. It’s fresh, forward, and approachable out of the gate. Enjoy now - 2025.

The Surprise We Love to Share

2016 Tenuta Collazzi Toscana IGT

All the dusty Italian elegance you crave at a fraction of the price of the region’s marquee names. Vinous calls Tenuta Collazzi one of “a gorgeous set of wines,” a standout from a vintage hailed as a modern classic.

Tasting Note: Concentrated ruby-black at the center with ruby highlights. Dark blackberry and cassis on the nose with balsamic-soaked dried cherries. Dried flowers and incense give this wine a nice backdrop to the palate, which is centered and rich and opens up to the sense of savory spices and espresso. The wine feels young and energetic but with great poise and class on the finish. Drink now-2032.

Stunning Uco Valley Discovery

2018 Almarada Malbec Uco Valley Mendoza

Rarely found outside Argentina, the 2018 Antonio Mas Almarada Malbec offers off-the-charts New World quality at a deal that’s impossible to walk away from.

Tasting Note: A lush and generous 2018 Malbec coming out of the famed Uco Valley. Inviting and playful in the glass, it’s driven by a magenta core. Aromas led by steeped violets, wet rocks, and crayon are rounded by a handful of mint. In the palate, a muscular and well-rounded dose of farmers market blackberry is complemented by a dose of minerals and cocoa resolving in elegant tannins. Drink now - 2026.
