Wine Set Includes:
2018 Halpin Sauvignon Blanc Dry Creek Valley Sonoma County ($20)
valued at $35 from winery
Halpin’s new favorite house-Sauvignon Blanc is his own—it’s not vanity, it’s just terrific. Bright, crisp flavors of citrus and fresh green herbs are accented by tropical flavors of mango and pineapple, and a long finish begs for another sip,
Bright, pale lemon in color. Aromas of fresh Meyer lemon, grapefruit, and lime zest jump from the glass and lead into this fresh, light-bodied, zippy Sauvignon Blanc. Across the palate, citrus flavors continue to dominate, accented by hints of fresh green herbs and undertones of ripe tropical fruit including papaya, pineapple, and mango. A long finish begs for a second sip.
2016 Applique Chardonnay ($25)
valued at $40 from winery
The 2016 Appliqué Chardonnay, with its richness and citrus-meets-orchard complexity, left everyone at the table reaching for the (already empty) bottle. From the hillsides of the Hidden Ridge Vineyard, we shouldn’t have been surprised by the incredible balance of ripe fruit and refreshing acidity of the 2016 Appliqué. When we crunched the numbers, it only got better.
A lemon hue in the glass, the 2016 shows off its warm vintage with full, fleshy aromatics redolent of ripe pineapple, mango, and apple pie filling. On the palate, this is classic California— full-bodied and rich, marrying ripe apple, pear, and pineapple fruit with fresh-cut wildflowers and cream. For lovers of robust, richly-textured whites this is an excellent value bottle with energy and fruit to spare. Drink now - 2024.
2018 Karo-Kann Pinot Noir Los Carneros Napa Valley ($20)
valued at $50 from winery
We took a legal vow of silence on revealing the grape whisperers who grew this Pinot, but we’ll shout the virtues of this ruby Pinot from the San Pablo Bay to New York City: With outstanding Carneros grapes from the abundant 2018 vintage, winemaker Britt Nichols produced a Pinot of ethereal weight and unforgettable elegance, with vibrant notes of Bing cherries and raspberries anchored by hints of forest floor, herbs, and oak spice.
Pale, translucent ruby. Vibrant nose of fresh Bing cherry, raspberry, forest floor, fresh herbs, and tilled earth. Lightweight, with an open-knit texture and inviting flavors of strawberry and cherry, showing satiny tannins and a hint of earth and oak spice. A lighter, more elegant expression of California Pinot Noir. Drink now - 2022.
2016 Idiosyncrasy Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa Valley ($48)
valued at $150 from winery
99-point winemaker Julien Fayard calls his 2016 “ripe and seductive. It’s sexy and soft, with supple tannins that make it perfect for early drinking.” The Wine Access members who got in on the first release of this ruby stunner agreed, calling the 2016 Reserve a “Fantastic Cab” and adding it has “Incredible depth and length...Definitely worth $49.”
Presenting a black core in the glass with a deep purple rim. Brooding aromas of black cherry, blueberry, pomegranate, pie spice, violets, and baking chocolate open invitingly with some air. Luscious on the palate, its silken, fine-grained tannins belie the full body and rich intensity of blackberry compote, tobacco, and vanilla flavors, all melding seamlessly on the finish. Fans of big Cabernets will find it almost too easy to drink, a great value for collectors, priced to enjoy regularly, but structured to improve in the cellar. Drink now-2028.
2016 Delightful and Strange Reserve Proprietary Red Wine Napa Valley ($30)
valued at $110 from winery
The polished 2016 Delightful & Strange Proprietary Red Wine Napa Valley shows off yet another “vintage of the decade.” It is abundant with richness, full of mystery, and the kind of wine we love to drink at home and share with anyone who stays long enough to have a glass.
Deep purple-ruby color, opaque at its core. A bold and opulent Napa Valley red packed with aromas of wild blackberry, mountain blueberry, and pomegranate, tinged with pops of licorice, cinnamon, mocha, vanilla, and espresso bean. Full-bodied, with a rich and creamy palate balanced by flavors of fresh black cherry and notes of chocolate, with supple, chewy mountain tannins, finishing with lingering dark fruits and terrific mouthwatering acidity, which is a hallmark of the vintage. Drink now-2026.
2018 Piece of Work Rose California ($18)
valued at $28 from winery
This is a crowd-pleaser that everyone will get, sourced from premier vineyards. Prime Pinot Noir grapes were sourced from one of Wine Spectator’s “serious” Sonoma wineries, and also from one of the oldest continuously operating wineries in Carneros, which Wine & Spirits magazine a “Year’s Best Pinot” frontrunner. Together, they put bright, just-picked red berry flavors at the forefront in a wine that’s the opposite of watery, featherweight rosés. Piece of Work is a powerful, ruby wine with flavor for days and the body to give reds a run for their money from now until Thanksgiving.
Deep, luminous pink-salmon color. Enticing aromas of watermelon, fresh strawberries, and crushed-stone minerality, with just a hint of violet florals. Rich, but light on its feet, packed with yummy red cherry, melon, and kiwi, with a crisp and refreshing orange-zest and grapefruit finish. Not your Provençal style, this richer, provocative rosé calls for hearty summer salads, marinated grilled meats, and oysters Rockefeller. Enjoy now through 2020.
