    A Conversation-Stopping Prosecco in Treviso

We’d been drinking plenty of Prosecco during our jaunt around the Veneto, but none had the vibrant purity and complexity of Sorelle Bronca Modi. The aromas and flavors had a precision we hadn’t tasted in our travels, despite a score of meals in osterie that began with a glass of the local bubbly.

This wine disappears alarmingly fast. With a fine mousse, intriguing complexity, and a perfect balance between classical, pear-inflected Prosecco fruit and a bright, crisp finish—all that’s left to do is think about its deliciousness and hope there’s another bottle in the fridge.

Sorelle Branca makes their wines with a level of care and craftsmanship that translates to uncommon elegance and nuance in the glass, and the small, family-run Prosecco house should command a significant premium based on the quality of their bubbles. But the sisters (Sorelle) are a hidden gem, so we’re able to offer their dazzling Prosecco for a song.

After watching yet another cruise ship disembark in Venice, escaping the crowds was the only thing on our minds—finding a new favorite bubbly wasn’t a possibility we entertained as we hopped on a train to Treviso—the other city with canals, just half an hour away—to meet up with our friend Elena for the afternoon.

She greeted us at the station wearing a pair of red and white checked pants and a cerulean scarf, while holding a giant picnic basket—and a bottle of Sorelle Branca’s Modi, which stole the show as we sat between two canals on the Isola della Pescheria, ostensibly to catch up and take in some of Treviso’s local culture.

Once we started to smell the wine, the beautiful surroundings fell out of focus, leaving us alone its gorgeous scents of pear drop, Meyer lemon zest, and jasmine flowers. The bubbles were small and the mousse elegant, with flavors of white peaches, honeysuckle, and a touch of slate minerality lingering on the palate and demanding another sip.

It’s a textbook Prosecco, eager to please and lyrical in its pretty fruit, but with an attention to detail that separates it from its competitors. The Branca sisters farm organically, and their vineyards teem with life—wildflowers, insects, and birds abound—in stark contrast to most of the viticulture in the region. It’s an expensive way to grow grapes, as is working the steep hillside vineyards—another rarity among Prosecco producers.

They also go through the unusual step of holding their wines in tanks at exceptionally cold temperatures, so that they can bottle multiple times per year for maximum freshness. It’s time- and space-intensive, but the results speak for themselves with a freshness and vibrancy that’s married to a rare layer of complexity and nuance.

Sitting in the sun in Treviso, the bottle disappeared dangerously quickly—as did a second, once procured. We keep finding excuses to open this wine, both before and during dinner, and you will too.
