We enjoyed meeting all of you and are thrilled to offer you this exclusive set featuring the wines poured at Rapt Studio on Thursday, October 25.
These wines were hand-picked by our Wine Team and are suited to pair perfectly for any occasion. Only 20 of these sets are available now through 11/25.
This Rapt Studio Wine Set includes:
2013 Nicholson Jones Chardonnay The Dolly Hill Vineyard Carneros
Julien Fayard’s Nicholson Jones Dolly Hill Chardonnay from Parker’s “vintage of a lifetime” has the luscious texture of Napa Carneros Chardonnay, balanced by the freshness of a terrific Fumé Blanc. “The French say ‘aerien,’” Fayard told Wine Access, which translates to “elevated and pure.” That’s this wine in a nutshell. Julien Fayard’s resume is heavy with accolades for his mouthwatering 98-100-point red wines off Beckstoffer To Kalon (the final results are not in yet, but he’s one point away from perfection), and all his expert touch — and restraint — is on full display in this exquisite Old World-inspired white. The result of his meticulous skill is a beautiful Grand Cru Chablis-inspired Chardonnay made with native yeast, and fermented and aged in stainless steel — without oak or malolactic conversion. In the blockbuster vintage of 2013, the grapes ripened perfectly in Truchard’s relatively warm spot in Carneros, and are bursting with vibrant acidity.
2016 Karo-Kann Pinot Noir Los Carneros Napa
The 2016 Karo-Kann Pinot Noir Los Carneros is a win-win. For you: an abundantly silky $45 Pinot for half the price. For the winery: one of Carneros’ preeminent producers recovers after a small 2015 crop. The vineyard, a stone’s throw from the legendary Hyde Vineyard where luminary Pinots from Patz & Hall ($65) and Paul Hobbs ($80) come, this winery is beloved for its lavish, silken Pinot that provides excellent value. The low yielding 2015 vintage resulted in meticulously tended, tiny-production at this boutique Los Carneros, Napa vineyard. The winery, whose wines have been poured in many of San Francisco and New York’s best restaurants, lost several lucrative wine list placements after the short 2015 crop left them with little supply. In 2016, things were much more plentiful, and the winery found itself with more Pinot than it was able to sell without all of its prior placements. Their first call went to Wine Access. They wouldn’t have to make another.
2015 Mario Schiopetto Collio Friulano DOC
Mario Schiopetto, and his eponymous estate continues to produce critically-acclaimed head-turners. James Suckling rated the 2015 Mario Schiopetto Friulano Collio 95 points and called it “gorgeous” and “superb,” while praising its stone fruit aromas, and intense spiciness. Gambero Rosso, Italy’s vigilant guardian of quality, gives it Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses), their highest honor. It is one of the finest examples of Friulano. It may sound strange, but the late Schiopetto’s travels abroad as a truck driver are what enabled him to express the terroir of Friuli — Italy’s epicenter of fine white wine. He embraced French viticultural canons and German technology (cold-fermentation and stainless steel aging), which spurred the “Schiopetto Style.” It was this marriage of tradition and innovation for which Mario would become known, in Friuli and well beyond, after he first bottled “Tocai” from his now-esteemed Capriva estate in 1965.
2013 Le Roc des Anges Segna de Cor Cotes du Roussillon Villages
The 2013 Roc des Anges “Segna de Cor” is drawn from a patchwork quilt of 28 distinct parcels, where roots burrow 5 meters into sand and schist, ferreting out precious water reserves. Despite massive concentration (alcohol flirts with 15%), acids are far firmer than in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Broad, dense, and powerfully built, yet perfectly weightless on the palate, this is one to stockpile.
2015 Pompier Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
In the decade-plus since we sent our first missive, our commitment has always been to present a highly-selective set of wines, direct from the source. But it’s only been in the last two years that we’ve been able to relax some of the strict NDAs that have prevented us from telling you anything about the makers of some of our best Napa Cabernet bargains. What we can tell you is in the spirit of charity, they offered us a gorgeous lot of St. Helena Cabernet with all the pedigree of one of their single-vineyard $100 releases. Bold and full of class, with deeply concentrated black and red fruit, chocolate, and spice, the 2015 takes after the 11,000 First-Responders who inspired it—firefighters from all over the world, who battled last October’s fires in Napa and Sonoma. Rich and creamy, with fine-grained tannins, these barrels would have been totally out of reach were it not for the intention and spirit of this collaboration to show our appreciation.
2015 Clos Sainte Anne Premieres Cotes de Bordeaux
Owners Marie and Sylvie Courselle have leveraged the Right Bank’s signature grapes—90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc—to produce a silky wine, redolent of plum fruit, black currants, violets, savory spice, and bolstered by refined tannins. Just south of the famed Left and Right Banks of Bordeaux, east of the Garonne River, lies the Côtes de Bordeaux, a sub-region created in 2009. The area’s patchwork of vineyards with sloping hills, steep terraces, and well-draining gravel, alluvial and clay soils, is more reminiscent of Tuscan vineyard-scapes.
