The Flavors and Textures of World Famous Pinot Regions
I find the broad spectrum of flavors and textures one can encounter in Pinot Noir from around the world to be both intriguing and delicious. It’s no secret that Pinot Noir is considered particularly adept at transmitting the unique aspects of a vineyard site’s soil and climate (aka terroir) into characteristics that can be tasted in the glass. the best examples reveal layers of subtle nuance which continue to unfold each time the drinker comes back to the glass.
Today, I’ve compiled a sampler of three different wines that showcase just how diverse and enchanting Pinot Noir can be. Each represents a truly individual manifestation of this variety, but all display the perfume and elegance which are hallmarks of the variety.
2014 Domaine De La Cote Sta Rita Hills Pinot Noir
A fantastic example of fresh and elegant new wave California Pinot Noir, showing restrained alcohol without compromising on ripeness of fruit. Medium ruby color, with incredibly pure red cherry and cranberry aromas, a silky mouthfeel and fresh acidity.
2014 Ponzi Classico Pinot Noir Willamette Valley
This wine strikes a great balance between richness and elegance, in a textbook dark-fruited Willamette Valley style. Ruby/purple with notes of dark cherry, plum and sandalwood. Medium bodied, with deliciously ripe fruit flavors.
2012 Domaine Aurelien Verdet Morey Saint Denis Rouge
Complex aromas of mixed red and black fruits, orange peel and exotic spices. Layered and finely textured, with supple tannins and an elegant finish. A lovely example of village level red Burgundy at a fantastic price.
