A Liquid Hole-in-One
Few things are better than a perfect 18 holes… but great wine is one of them. In tandem with Todd “Tron” Schuster of the No Laying Up podcast, we’ve curated a trio of wines that are perfect on and off the fairway. This set goes beyond traditional Napa Cabernets and Sonoma Pinot Noirs, highlighting Tron’s favorite off the beaten path regions, and our experts’ top picks for irresistible bottles. “I fell in love with Central Coast Pinot and Syrah on our Tourist Sauce Season 3 trip and it's been one of my favorites ever since,” Tron told us recently over glasses of Pinot Noir. Together this set combines Tron’s Wine Access-approved favorites in a single set that’s more glorious than a hole-in-one.
95 Points: Winemaker of the Year’s “Consistently Beautiful” White Blend
2019 Massican Winery Annia White Wine Napa Valley
Winemakers all over Napa serve Massican whites, and a pantheon of vintners can be spotted picking up their allocations at Dan’s house. “Massican is a great blend of two of my favorite grapes—Ribolla Gialla and Tocai Friulano,” says Tron. “This one offers the depth of a great chard or pinot blanc, but is far less weighty and far more approachable.” Dan's crisp, characterful, 95pt homage to Italy is absolutely ready to drink right now.
Foxen Pinot is “Up with the Crème de la Crème”
2017 Foxen Winery Block 43 Bien Nacido Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley
Jeb Dunnuck’s 96-point review put Foxen’s Block 43 alongside $200 Pinots from cult favorite Kosta Browne. It’s the best ever from one of the Grand Cru sites of California. “I fell in love with Central Coast Pinot on our Tourist Sauce Season 3 trip and it's been one of my favorites ever since,” Tron told us recently over glasses of this ruby Pinot Noir. “And this is one is a really, really great value,” he says.
An Iconic Syrah from Winemakers of the Year
2019 Arnot-Roberts Syrah Sonoma Coast
The NY Times called Arnot-Roberts “superb,” and its founders were named “Napa's Retro Dudes,” and “Winemakers of the Year.” Tiny-production Syrah is their bread and butter, and an exceedingly rare find. “The Syrah is a step away from the Pinot, Merlot, and Cab grapes that predominate in Sonoma, and this one is both sharp and energetic,” says Tron. “It’s Bursting with flavor.”
