“Can You Imagine…”
“Can you imagine if you’d discovered Jacques Selosse before anyone else?”
These days, no name in the wine world carries more cachet than Selosse. So when our friend—a Master of Wine who wrote a book about Champagne—asked us that question as he drove us alongside a hillside en route to Champagne Maurice Grumier, our interest was beyond piqued.
Two hours later, after we’d tasted Grumier’s Solera Extra Brut with Fabien Grumier, we realized that our friend hadn’t just introduced us to a phenomenal producer—he’d leaked one of the greatest secrets in Champagne.
Grower-producer Maurice Grumier has been a figure in the Marne Valley for nearly 300 years, and this Solera Extra Brut represents the pinnacle of their lineup. It’s made using what’s known as a reserve perpetual: a rare form of winemaking in which several vintages of wine are held in barrel for years, then combined in various portions to make up a bottling. Grumier’s solera started in 2005, and this bottle—comprising equal parts Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay—consists of 60% base wine from 2012 blended with 40% reserve wines from 2005–2011.
It’s tempting to say that this Champagne is going to take the US by storm, just like Selosse has, but it’s ONLY for Wine Access members—so while the secret is out, technically, it’s still in the circle of trust.
This is an outstanding example of a rare style of Champagne, and it represents one of our greatest finds ever, from any region. That’s why we imported it ourselves. For anyone who delights in Champagne or once-in-a-lifetime discoveries, this is a must-try—an exquisitely crafted bottle to be savored.
