The Thrill of Discovery
It wasn’t long into our tasting with Fabien Grumier that we realized we hadn’t just found a phenomenal producer—we’d stumbled upon one of the greatest secrets in Champagne.
Tipped off to the winery by a friend—a Master of Wine who contributes to Decanter and wrote a book about vintage Champagne—we marveled as it immediately revealed itself as a treasure. The bottle that enraptured us was the Grumier Ô ma Vallée Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut.
We have no doubt that Grumier would be a household name if their wines didn’t get snatched up by restaurants and Champagne lovers before they leave the Continent. This bottle had never been imported into the US, so we claimed an allocation and imported it ourselves.
Grower-producer Maurice Grumier has been a figure in the Marne Valley for nearly 300 years. They’ve sold fruit to established houses like Perrier-Jouet and Taittinger for years, and since 1924 they’ve created small quantities of some of the most characterful and delicious Champagnes found anywhere in the region.
The Ô Ma Vallée is crafted from Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir grown on Grumier’s vineyards in Dormans, Festigny, and Venteuil. Fermented in barrels and stainless-steel tanks (including full malolactic fermentation) and then given a slight filtration, aged two years on the lees, and dosed to contain just four g/l of residual sugar, it’s a pitch-perfect bottle that wowed our entire team.
For anyone who delights in Champagne or once-in-a-lifetime discoveries, this is a must-try—a beautiful Blanc de Noirs to savor in magnum format.
