One of the Greatest Hidden Gems in Champagne
It wasn’t long into our tasting with Fabien Grumier that we realized we hadn’t just found a phenomenal producer—we’d stumbled upon one of the greatest secrets in Champagne.
Tipped off to the winery by a friend—a Master of Wine who contributes to Decanter and wrote a book about Champagne—we marveled as we tasted wine after wine that reinforced Grumier’s status as a hidden treasure. How could they not be widely available in the US?
We have no doubt that Grumier would be a household name if their wines didn’t get snatched up by restaurants and Champagne lovers in Europe—and the most difficult Grumier bottling to secure was the Coeur de Rosé, which took us a full year to bring in.
It was only after our members went wild for Grumier’s other Champagnes, which number among our most beloved, that the winery granted us a tiny allocation—just 300 bottles—and we immediately claimed them for this club.
Grower-producer Maurice Grumier has been a figure in the Marne Valley for nearly three centuries. They’ve sold fruit to established houses like Perrier-Jouet and Tattinger for years, and since 1924 they’ve created small quantities of some of the most characterful and delicious Champagnes found anywhere in the region.
The Coeur de Rosé is crafted from Pinot Noir grown in Venteuil and Meunier from Festigny, rounded out with a splash of Chardonnay. Fermented in barrels and stainless-steel tanks (including full malolactic fermentation), it’s then aged three years on the lees after bottling to develop richness and complexity.
