A “BSA” Worth Bringing Across the Pond
Tipped off to Champagne Maurice Grumier by a friend—a Master of Wine who contributes to Decanter and wrote a book about vintage Champagne—we quickly realized we’d found more than a phenomenal producer.
We’d stumbled upon one of the greatest secrets in Champagne.
Nestled against a hillside in the gorgeous Vallée de la Marne, we have no doubt that Grumier would be a household name if their wines didn’t get snatched up by restaurants and Champagne lovers in Europe. Upon tasting the wines, we insisted on bringing an allocation over for our members—and we’re proud to announce two wines that RARELY see the western side of the Atlantic.
Grower-producer Maurice Grumier has been a figure in the Marne Valley for nearly 300 years. They’ve sold fruit to established houses like Perrier-Jouet and Tattinger for years, and since 1924 they’ve created small quantities of some of the most characterful and delicious Champagnes found anywhere in the region.
Technically a “BSA”—brut sans année, the Champenois term for a nonvintage bubbly—Grumier’s 100%-Chardonnay Blanc de Venteuil hails from the 2015 and 2017 vintages. It’s a luxurious Blanc de Blancs that earned 93 points and Editors’ Choice honors from Wine Enthusiast, and it puts others at its price point firmly in their place.
