The Single Greatest Wine From 17,200 Tasted
The Single Greatest Wine From 17,200 Tasted
Discovered by our own Master of Wine, Matt Deller MW — a judge at this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards — we are excited to offer Wine Access clients an exclusive advance opportunity to secure Decanter’s highest-scoring wine from among 17,200 entries. With 65 Masters of Wine and 20 Master Sommeliers judging, the Decanter World Wine Awards is the world’s largest and most prestigious wine competition — and this was selected as the top wine this year. Coming direct from the winery, the glorious 99-point Lustau Oloroso VORS is a Very Old Rare Sherry, matured for a minimum average age of 30 years.
It’s hard to convey in words the incredible layers of bouquet and texture in this wine, but the Decanter judges do a pretty good job: “Plenty of complexity and attractive, nuanced aged characters on the nose. The palate is deep, rich, powerful with a taut aldehydic character giving burnt orange, cinnamon, cardamom and Demerara sugar. Very fresh and long.”
For wine aficionados and collectors who have yet to savor the delights of Very Old Rare Oloroso, the ideal opportunity has arrived. Jancis Robinson MW describes old rare sherry as “undiscovered treasure” and asks, provocatively, whether it’s “the best value fine wine in the world?” Those who already appreciate oloroso know the answer — it doesn’t get any better than this.
Established in 1896, Bodegas Emilio Lustau produces some of the most sought-out Sherries in the region today. Lustau VORS have a certified aging of at least 30 years, validated by the Sherry Wine Regulating Council. Furthermore, Lustau’s VORS Oloroso is subjected to a strict selection process that results in only 1,000 x 500ml bottles.
“Dry sherry is not just one of the most undervalued wines in the world,” Victoria Moore notes in her book, The Wine Dine Dictionary, “it’s also a consummate food wine.” Very Old Rare Oloroso is incredible with slow-cooked and braised meats, particularly barbecue and casseroles.
