Krug Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition
Krug’s regal Grande Cuvée is an undeniable legend. It comes from a Champagne house that many consider the greatest in the region, and it holds a stunning 98-point score from Wine Enthusiast. Spectator called it a “classy Champagne” that “waltzes across the palate with fluid poise and grace.”
The production of Krug’s Grande Cuvées takes place on a timeline foreign to most of us, as each release requires somewhere between 20 and 25 years to assemble. This 172nd release is built around the 2016 vintage and comprises 44% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay, and 20% Pinot Meunier. Nearly half of it is composed of reserve wines. Overall, it’s built of 146 different wines —yes, that’s right—blended from 11 vintages dating back to 1998.
The elegance and complexity of this wine shine through its celebratory golden core and energetic mousse. Unfolding like an orchestra, the bouquet is led by freshly baked croissant, quince, and Amalfi lemon, delicately dusted with toasted nuts. The mouthwatering palate strikes a perfect harmony between richness and fruit, while an elegant acidity provides structure through the long finish.
No matter what the makeup of your cellar might be, Krug’s timeless Grande Cuvée is a stellar, jealousy-inducing, night-to-remember addition.
