Very Few Make Meunier Like Moussé

In an out-of-the-way corner of Champagne's Vallée de la Marne, Cédric Moussé crafts one of the region's most compelling expressions of Meunier: Les Vignes de Mon Village Blanc de Noirs.

This remarkable wine, composed entirely of Meunier from the tucked-away commune of Cuisles, perfectly embodies the estate's philosophy of elevating this often-underappreciated grape variety. The current release harmoniously marries the vivacity of the 2022 vintage (50%) with the depth and complexity of a perpetual blend spanning 2014-2021 (50%), creating a Champagne that defies conventional wisdom about Meunier's capabilities.

The wine's distinctive character owes much to Cuisles' unique terroir, particularly its rare green clay soil known as Illite, which runs between Jonquery and Châtillon-sur-Marne. This potential was recognized early on by Cédric's late father Jean-Marc, who passionately defended Meunier's nobility: "You can make superb wines from Meunier. It has aromas that you just don't find in other varieties... We absolutely love Meunier here," he wrote in the family’s newsletter.

From his modest 5.5-hectare estate, Moussé crafts Champagnes that stand apart from typical Meunier expressions, which tend toward either earthy intensity or exuberant fruitiness. Cédric's meticulous attention to detail extends far beyond the vineyard. His commitment to excellence manifests in everything from his experimental work with different types of crown-caps and varying degrees of pressure (4.8 to 6.0 bars) to his thoughtful rejection of branded corks due his worry about their aromatic impact.

This precision is evident in Les Vignes de Mon Village, which achieves what few Meunier-based Champagnes manage: a perfect balance between the variety's natural fruitiness and a refined, elegant structure that's focused on minerality, tension and elegance.
