Our Favorites from Classic European Winegrowing Enclaves
There’s never been a better moment for armchair travel for wine lovers, and our European Classics Set is a four-bottle tour of some of the continent’s finest terroirs. From our favorite, yet undersung, locales like the Loire Valley, Northern Rhône, and Rioja, these bottles channel the energy and verve that have made their homelands wine list staples for decades.
The Wine Worth A Year-Long Wait
2018 Domaine Michel Brégeon Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie
It took 1 year, 2 trips to Paris, and 34 emails to secure this Loire Valley standard-bearer and Michelin-starred restaurant favorite. You'll have to excuse our French because we just have one word: "Magnifique."
Tasting Note: Medium golden-straw in color. Bright aromas of ripe lemons, green apple, citrus blossom, and seafoam. Classically structured, but a bit broader compared to other Muscadets, laden with citrus fruit and flinty minerality. Mouth-wateringly refreshing on the finish. Drink now - 2032.
An Icon’s Every-Day Red
2016 Paul Jaboulet Aîne Le Grand Pompée Saint Joseph
Paul Jaboulet Aîné’s landmark Rhône reds belong alongside the First Growths and cult Cabernets in your cellar. Their spicy, complex Grand Pompée is a savory, tightly-wound red that showcases their Syrah mastery.
Tasting Note: Medium ruby in color, with a slight magenta cast. Savory white pepper, garrigue, rosemary, and flint aromas march forth in lockstep with ripe raspberry, wild plum, and red currant fruits. Tightly focused on the palate, this is a lean, sinewy, chewy Syrah. Flavors of loganberry and red cherry collide across the palate with savory notions of black pepper, smoke, menthol, and leather, finishing with a sustained spiciness and minerality. Its high-toned savory nature instantly recalls the rustic, vertiginous slopes of Saint-Joseph's terroir. Drink now - 2025.
In Tuscany, A Massive Overachiever
2015 Monte Antico Rosso Toscana IGT
In true Monte Antico fashion, the Rosso delivers a chart-topping performance. Like its older sibling, the member-favorite Supremus, the 90-point, Rosso is headed for a speedy sellout.
Tasting Note: Dark ruby center with crimson-ruby reflections at the rim. The nose asserts itself with an array of dark red fruits, warm raspberry, sour cherry, and smoke-kissed cranberry. There are notes of dried flowers, dried autumn fruits, and dusty red earth. The palate is polished and juicy upon opening, and begins to deepen and become more serious with 30 to 45 minutes of air. There is a substantial finish for a wine of this price point, and it shows the classic Sangiovese qualities in spades. Drink now - 2025.
Drink Like the Spanish Locals
2010 El Centimo Real Rioja Crianza
Rare is the Rioja from a vintage Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated 95pts—the best since the chart began in 1970—that offers this level of sophistication. Perfectly cellared and ready to drink now.
Tasting Note: Rare, perfectly-aged Crianza from Spain’s greatest vintage in decades. Ruby in color. Fabulous aromas of fresh Mission plum, dried roses, and turned red soil hinting at sweet, dried herbs. Juicy and full on entry with a delicious mix of red fruits, earth, subtle dried tobacco, and sweet herbal undertones. A showstopper, giving way to a 60-90 second finish.
