Sparkling Marne Valley Stunner
You can’t know the Meunier grape (née Pinot Meunier) without knowing Champagne’s Vallée de la Marne—and you can’t know the Vallée de la Marne without knowing Meunier. Meunier is the marquee variety in the Marne Valley, where it takes on the import and stature that its Champagne stablemates, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, enjoy worldwide.
The Marne Valley breaks west from the Champagne epicenter of Épernay, and it’s known for producing the region’s ripes, fullest wines. Unlike most of Champagne, which is famous for its chalky soils, the Marne Valley is rich in sand and clay. And it’s dominated by Meunier. Across the 81 villages in the area, 72% of the grapes grown are Meunier.
Charles Mignon’s Brut Premium Reserve is a blend of Meunier, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, with Meunier making up 55% of the blend. Non-vintage Champagne includes “reserve” wine—wines from past vintages—and the Mignon is made from 15% reserve wine from a solera started back in 2016. In the solera system, new wine is added every vintage to barrels full of wine that dates back, notionally, to the year the solera began.
Mignon has rows of vines in some of the top villages in Champagne and a small but state-of-the-art facility that drives the quality of the wines. They’ve been producing Champagne for six generations, and they only use stainless steel tanks for vinification—they don’t want oxidative or oaky flavors, and they use only grape sugar to dose their wines.
This a gorgeous blend that puts all three main Champagne grapes on display. Perfect for popping anytime!
