The Secret the French Don’t Want You to Know
Grower Champagne represents a whopping 45% of France’s Champagne consumption, but just 10% of the American market. Why?
The French know that grower bubbles offer outrageous value and stellar character, which is why many of the best ones never make it out of France. Exhibit A: Alfred Tritant’s micro-production jewel, the Grand Cru Mes Racines.
For years, Alfred Tritant sold all their grapes to merchants and negociants. After 1930, when they started producing their own Champagne, they continued to sell 20% of their grapes to Mumm. But in the 1950s, they started keeping all of their grapes for themselves.
Tritant is a TINY house, farming 19 plots that cover barely seven acres, producing just over 2000 nine-liter cases each year. Because of this minuscule production, they aren’t a candidate for a traditional three-tier importer. They were, however, perfect for us to direct-import ourselves.
This rich, full-bodied Champagne is 67% Pinot Noir and 33% Chardonnay from Bouzy and Ambonnay, hand-harvested, sustainably farmed, and given 41 months on the lees. The addition of a “perpetual reserve” solera blend gives the wine incredible complexity to complement its abundant apple and pear flavors. The dosage is 9g/L, rounding out the mouthfeel nicely.
Bouzy is a 100% Grand Cru-rated village in the heart of Pinot Noir country, on the Montagne de Reims. It’s home to great growers like Clouet, Benoît Lahaye, and Jean Vesselle. Here, the Tritants have been domaine-bottling their wine since 1930—decades ahead of their time.
