Swan Song of an Undisputed Italian Master
If Cerbaiona’s Rosso VDT is the punctuation on the late Diego Molinari’s legendary career, it’s not a question mark. It’s a powerful, densely fruited exclamation point.
One of the final wines crafted by Molinari—whose masterpieces rank “among the finest wines of Montalcino, and Italy,” according to Anotonio Galloni—it’s a gorgeously complex bottle grown primarily on estate vineyards comprise what the Wine Advocate called “one of the most blessed terroirs in the entire appellation.”
Cerbaiona’s unique location between Montalcino’s cooler, hillier north and warmer, flatter south yields grapes that are generously rich yet fresh and structured—a seamless combination epitomized in the Rosso VDT. This rare Sangiovese blend, crafted from declassified Brunello grapes from 2013 and 2015, intertwines beauty and brawn with succulent notes of summer cherry and tea leaves that give way to silky tannins on a long-lasting finish.
When the Wine Advocate tasted it in 2020, they praised it as “a real beauty,” saying they’re “excited to recommend it.” Now with two more years under its belt, this Rosso VDT is even more intricate and polished.
Molinari was a stalwart of old-school winemaking who took a hands-off approach in the cellar, fermenting with native yeasts and aging entirely in large Slavonian-oak casks. It’s a style that made fans of just about every notable critic, even inspiring Galloni to say: “If forced to drink only one wine from Montalcino, I might very well choose Diego Molinari’s sumptuous Brunello."
After tasting the Rosso VDT, we see Galloni’s point. It’s a taut, brooding wine with remarkable fruit purity, savory depth, and the complexity of multiple Sangiovese vintages—a fitting swan song for an undisputed master.
