The “Quintessential Médoc Wine”
Ducru-Beaucaillou, named a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification, has commonly been listed among the unofficial “Super Seconds.” Their terroir, defined by its beaux cailloux (“beautiful pebbles”), is known as some of the best in all of Saint-Julien. In fact, Christie’s Auction House opined that “Many Bordeaux specialists consider this estate to be the quintessential Médoc wine.”
2000 Château Ducru Beaucaillou Saint-Julien: From a widely lauded vintage that Robert Parker said “produced great quality,” this wine earned 96 points from Parker’s Wine Advocate, who hailed it as “Stunning!”
1996 Château Ducru Beaucaillou Saint-Julien: “A great vintage for the Médoc and Cabernet Sauvignon–based wines,” 1996 produced a gorgeous Beaucaillou. Parker called it “profound” and a “must purchase” in his 96-point review.
1995 Château Ducru Beaucaillou Saint-Julien: “The greatest Ducru produced this century,” began Wine Spectator’s original 97-point review of the 1995. This wine took Spectator’s Wine of the Year honors in 1998.
1986 Château Ducru Beaucaillou Saint-Julien: From a season that Robert Parker called “without a doubt a great vintage for the northern Médoc,” this stunner earned 95 points from Wine Spectator. They called the powerful Bordeaux “a monster” that “may last forever.”
1985 Château Ducru Beaucaillou Saint-Julien: Robert Parker that the top Médoc wines of 1985 “may turn out to represent clones of the gorgeously seductive 1953 vintage.” This Ducru, “a wine of extraordinary charm and elegance,” was among his top wines of the season.
1982 Château Ducru Beaucaillou Saint-Julien: “One of the all-time great Ducrus” wrote Parker in his 96-point 2009 review of the 1982. Even more impressively, his colleagues Lisa Perrotti-Brown and William Kelley gave it scores of 97 and 96—in 2020 and 2022! An undeniable legend.
