A Stunning Outlier in Style—and Price
The 2024 Auntsfield Single Vineyard bottling is everything an elite Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc should be.
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate dubbed it “a gorgeous wine,” awarding 94 points—tying this release for the second highest-rated Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc of the vintage! Mouthwateringly fresh, saline-kissed, bursting with aromas of fresh-cut grass and ripe passionfruit, it effortlessly hits all its varietal marks. But thanks to the hillside vineyard’s denser, clay-laden soils and rigorously low yields, it also has a rounded weightiness scarcely found in New Zealand’s South Island—supplying the kind of succulent richness you’d expect from a Bourgogne or Bordeaux Blanc.
“The Auntsfield property and family philosophy capture pretty much everything I admire in fine wine: a reverence for place, detail-focused winemaking, clever viticulture and a family environment,” wrote Wine Advocate.
All those elements came together with a 2024 vintage that couldn’t be scripted much better to produce an exemplar of the Auntsfield Sauvignon Blanc style. The season in the Southern Valley was defined by a dry, hot summer and low cropping levels, both of which helped boost concentration. A drought reduced yields but also set vines up for healthy ripening long into the autumn.
Unlike alluvial vineyards on the valley floor, Auntsfield’s terroir is rich in Loess clay and Greywacke rock. Combine that with extended lees contact in the cellar and the use of neutral oak barrels, and you get a creamy, densely textured Sauvignon Blanc that will delight all lovers of white wine.
