A Pinot Rosé of True Pedigree
Stéphane Vivier is one of Northern California’s true Pinot superstars: He was tapped by Aubert de Villaine of Burgundy’s iconic Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to head up his personal California outpost, Hyde de Villaine. Over his career, Vivier has built up such cachet that he now has access to some of the most prestigious vineyards in Sonoma County.
Hailing from the blustery Petaluma Gap region in Sonoma, aged and fermented in stainless steel, Vivier’s 2023 rosé of Pinot Noir is refreshing and lively, with a beguiling salmon hue and bright red-fruit and floral aromatics. Easy on the palate, with zingy acidity and zesty spice, it cruises to a focused, long-lasting finish.
Vivier grew up in a small village in Burgundy, and learned winemaking from a neighbor whose family had been producing wine for centuries. After earning degrees in viticulture and enology, he rose through the ranks of the wine world and eventually found himself accompanying de Villaine to California.
Vivier was with Hyde de Villaine until the end of 2020, and now he’s completely focused on his own label, which he and his wife Dana launched a decade ago, bankrolling the venture with a single credit card and initially producing a mere 30 cases. That number has grown only by a few hundred since then, even as demand has reached a fever pitch.
Vivier wines are staples at a number of fine-dining temples—including SingleThread, Eleven Madison Park, and Press—but this rosé is just as good in your own backyard on a balmy afternoon or evening. Pair it with a bowl of bouillabaisse, some baked Camembert with honey and fresh figs, or even a simple chicken-salad sandwich and potato chips.
