Between Two Volcanoes
Soave is one of the most exciting regions in Italy for a simple reason: It produces some of the most gorgeous terroir-driven white wine in the world for a shockingly low price.
And Tenuta di Corte Giacobbe is at the spear tip of Soave’s renaissance.
The estate owns vineyards in the town of Roncà. They’re planted on two extinct volcanoes, Calvarina and Crocetta, which creates coveted dark soils that are rich in broken-down lava and tufa—dirt prized for producing some of the best wines in the region. Corte Giacobbe’s vines grow as high as 600 meters above sea level, which helps vines retain more bright, fresh flavors in their berries.
Boasting 94 points and Best Buy honors from Wine Enthusiast, who ranked it as the top Soave of the vintage so far, this wowed us with its brilliant flavors of vibrant Amalfi lemon zest and crushed limestone wedded to seductive orchard fruit. It’s going to seduce anyone who loves crisp white wines.
Once they’re harvested at perfect ripeness, the Garganega grapes in this Soave are chilled to 40 degrees fahrenheit and held for 24 hours to help extract more flavor. After that, they’re squeezed with a modern press and fermented in stainless steel tanks.
The team at Corte Giacobbe performs weekly bâtonnage for three months after fermentation, building texture by stirring the lees. The result is a wine that balances vibrant zestiness with seductive fruit. It’s made for lovers of Grüner, Albariño, or Pinot Grigio—and it’s made to drink with abandon.
