We Wish We Could Drink This Chablis All the Time
We’re notorious for being tough on Chablis.
We drink more Chablis than almost any other white wine, and our standards are high: It’s got to have that bracing cut. It’s got to have unmistakably precise minerality. It’s got to have purity and persistence.
Alain and Adrien Gautherin’s 2022 Chablis is made in the exact style we’re looking for. A special cuvée that this father and son cull from their best village vines, it’s a fitting follow-up to the Gautherin family’s 2019 old-vine Chablis, which earned 4.6 stars and unanimous praise from Wine Access members.
This wine is made from vines averaging 37 years old, which is unheard of at this level. Old vines translate to lower yields and greater concentration—and what they bring in intensity, they lack in supply. Production is miniscule, so this bottle hardly ever leaves France.
Even two years after our first Gautherin sellout, it was difficult to get an allocation of this wine. Super traditional in style—not flashy or fleshy, but rather crisp and precise—it’s the rare Chablis that thrills us. You’re gonna love it.
