Top-Class Sancerre with Zip and Pedigree

“If your palate were a racetrack, this would be Formula One,” declared a member of our wine team about Brochard, and this 2023 is seriously impressive. Racy and mineral-rich, pointed and clean, it shows its French elegance with grace and a long, chalky finish.

With Sancerre, raciness and minerality are king—the reason that any starred restaurant worth their salt pours it by the glass—and Hubert Brochard’s 2023 Tradition is some seriously impressive stuff.

With crisp, clean, citrus aromatics plus a palate showing a lively, bristling energy, this is focused and precise with good cut throughout—beyond light on its feet, with waves of minerality that course through the long, chalky finish.

That quality has made Brochard our top-selling Sancerre of this decade—and that’s without us having sold the 2021, when yields were so low (and demand from French restaurants so high) that we couldn’t secure any for our members.

Situated on the eastern edges of the Loire Valley’s Sancerre AOC, Domaine Hubert Brochard—run by the fifth and sixth generations of the family—is one of only a small number of Sancerre producers who continue to harvest most of their grapes by hand. From their winery in the tiny hamlet of Chavignol, the family has always produced classically styled Sancerre that benefits from the range of Sauvignon Blanc across their diverse holdings.

With an average vine age over 30 years, the 2023 Tradition comes from six different communes in Sancerre, capturing the region’s most distinctive terroirs all in one bottle. Powerful, mineral, and buoyed by a keen-edged line of fresh acidity, the grapes’ character is preserved by vinification in stainless steel, resulting in a wine that zips across the palate.
