Beyond the Bordeaux You Might Know

One of just 11 Sauternes Premier Crus, Château Guiraud is known for delivering a staggering amount of quality for the price.

Their reputation rests upon their outstanding sweet wines. But savvy lovers of white Bordeaux know that Guiraud produces one of the under-the-radar white-wine gems of the region: the Blanc G de Guiraud.

At Guiraud, history and tradition are seamlessly integrated with modern approaches to viticulture and winemaking, and the ownership team is a serious power quartet. In addition to the pioneering Xavier Planty, there is Stephan Von Neipperg, manager of Chateau Canon La Gaffelière and Chateau La Mondotte. They’re joined by Olivier Bernard, manager of Domaine de Chevalier, and Robert Peugeot (yes, that Peugeot).

The team is extraordinarily experienced, well resourced, and has driven quality to new heights at Guiraud. In 2022, Sandrine Garbay—who enjoyed a long and storied career at Chateau d’Yquem—joined Guiraud as the estate director.

The quality shows in this wine. The 2023 Château Guiraud Blac G de Guiraud is a gorgeous white wine, showing elegant, effusive aromas of lemon curd, crushed white rocks, ripe mango, jasmine flowers, fresh green herbs, pineapple, and piles of orange blossoms. It’s juicy and plush on the palate, with lovely acidity and plentiful flavors of fresh grapefruit, ripe lychee, crushed seashells, just-cut sweetgrass, basil flowers, and fresh lime. Pair with grilled garlic shrimp, fresh herb focaccia, or an aged Alpine Emmenthaler cheese.
