The New Phase Begins
The question, the third-generation vintner told us, came down to how much they were willing to wager on the quality of their terroir.
His answer: “We were willing to bet big.”
Owners of some of the most covetable land in Napa Valley—100+ acres spread across Oakville, Rutherford, and a couple other prime AVAs—his family had long made excellent Cabernets that their wine club, their mailing list, and visitors to their tasting room off of Highway 29 adored. But in 2021, they decided it was time to go beyond “beloved.”
They were aiming for world-class. And they knew the talent that would get them there.
So they hosted the winemaking team—world-renowned crafters of countless 100-point wines—for a tasting and tour of the vineyard holdings and winery. This is not a team that you can hire just by plunking down a hefty retainer. It’s a team that you practically try out for. And if they’ll work with you—if they like what they see in terms of terroir, facilities, and, crucially, commitment—they might just take you on.
In the spring of 2022, they struck a deal. By harvest, the team was firmly in place and calling the shots. That meant that 2022 would be a Year Zero of sorts—the dawning of a new age for this winery of unlimited potential.
Nearly 98% Cabernet Sauvignon accented with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it spent 14 months in 35% new French oak. It’s just a baby now, but it’s drinking beautifully young and will age nicely for the next eight years or so.
