Value Not Possible a Half Century Ago
Prying the beloved 2022 Prosper Maufoux Blanc out of France was no small feat, but we’re immensely glad we managed to do it—because this kind of white Burgundy character almost never comes at a price like this.
From a historic estate founded in 1860, this bottle brings hillside depth and limestone vibrancy directly from the heart of the Hautes Côtes de Nuits. It’s not far from the great properties of Nuits-Saint-Georges—the village with more Premier Cru vineyards than anywhere else in the northern Côte d’Or—where wines easily go for over $150.
The cool slopes in the town of Bévy, not far from Nuits-Saint-Georges, are rocky and windy—perfect for producing the lean, crunchy base wines that make for exceptional sparkling wine. A half century ago, the 36 acres of Chardonnay vines in the Vigne au Roy property were farmed for sparkling Crémant.
But as in so many other places in France, advances in viticultural techniques helped improve the ripeness of grapes at harvest. Vintages got warmer. And what was previously “too cold” for still wine production became “just right.”
Now, Prosper Maufoux’s hillsides produce a wine that’s richer and more generous than Chablis, but lighter on its feet than Meursault, with yellow apple, white peach, and lemon oil notes that we find beautifully captivating. It’s a bottle that’s casual enough to drink on the porch on a warm summer night, but boasts the complexity to impress your friends, when you serve it with halibut sauced with leeks and cream.
