The Sound’s Singular White
The Puget Sound is practically made for Siegerrebe.
A network of islands, fjords, and glacier-carved hills around a branching tendril of cold water, Washington’s only AVA west of the Cascades is the definition of maritime. For a variety like Siegerrebe—an obscure Gewürztraminer offspring that thrives in cool, temperate climates—that’s heaven. Especially in Öömrang’s sustainably farmed neck of the woods.
Their serene 85 acres occupy a distinct microclimate between the Olympic and Cascade Mountains. Like giant ramparts, these mountains shelter the region from the extremes, giving it cool summers, mild winters, and less rain than surrounding areas—similar to Germany’s Franconian winegrowing region.
In 2022, Öömrang’s vineyards yielded an enticing and vibrantly aromatic expression of the grape. Mandarin blossom, candied citrus rind, and stone fruit aromas abound. The palate is semi-dry, with layers of white peach, lemon, florals, and enough acidity to carry everything through the long finish. When our wine team first tasted it, they called it “truly in a class of its own.”
This kind of complex, German-style white wine is Öömrang’s calling card, and it’s earned them a reputation as a rock-solid producer. They were Pr%f magazine’s 2023 Winery of the Year, and their bottles have graced the wine lists at high-end Vegas restaurants like Nobu, Sinatra, and Kame Omakase.
Founders Edmund and Christine Stoecklein made their first wine in their basement, in 2016, and they were hooked. They began planting vineyards several months later, and today, 22 of their 85 acres are devoted solely to German white varieties. Their 2022 Siegerrebe shows how their microclimate, thoughtful farming practices, and philosophy come together in a distinctive, thoroughly satisfying style.
