We Worked HARD for an Allocation

There are two kinds of rosé in this world: intentional rosé and rosé that is a byproduct.

“Byproduct” rosé is made from grape juice destined to become red wine. The pink juice is “bled” from the tank to increase the skin-to-juice ratio to make the resulting red darker and more concentrated. This is called the saignée method.

Intentional rosé is grown specifically to be rosé, and Martin Ray’s rosé of Pinot Noir is an excellent example. It’s a stroke of luck to be able to offer you this rosé. Because Martin Ray makes less than 1,000 cases of this wine, it was previously limited only to restaurants and the winery. But after years of work, we finally nabbed an allocation.

The key to this method of making rosé is earlier picking at higher acidity, ensuring a more fresh, balanced, and citrusy wine. This wine also happens to come from great vineyards: Martin Ray Estate on Laguna Ridge in Russian River Valley, Richioli (not to be confused with Rochioli), Foppiano, and the acclaimed Sangiacomo Vineyard on the Sonoma side of Carneros.

The effortlessness of balance in the glass is, of course, the result of intensive labor in the vineyard. That was the spirit in which Martin Ray—a pioneer of California viticulture alongside legends like Donn Chappellet and Robert Mondavi—founded his winery in the 1940s, and it continues in his name today.

All balance and elegance, this textbook rosé of Pinot Noir wowed us with aromas of crisp nectarine, citrus peels, and white strawberry. It’ll wow you too.
