    André Hueston Mack made his reputation pouring $25,000 bottles of Pinot Noir—but he found his calling making wines that sell for $25.

    As the Wine Director at Thomas Keller’s Per Se, André sold the greatest wines in the world. But when he left to start his own wine label, Maison Noir, he decided that he’d use his well of wine knowledge and the connections he’d built to produce bottles for the everyman and everywoman.

    In the 2022 vintage, he leaned on his deep Rolodex of vineyards and growers to produce a wine that’s an absolute stud of a value. Richer than many from the Willamette Valley, with great complexity, lush fruit and trademark Oregon silkiness, it’s a Pinot we turn to—time and time-again—for weeknight drinking.

    Mack knows how professional wine buyers think, because he was one—one of the best, in fact. “I was working as a sommelier at The French Laundry back when the Champagne cooler was in the chef’s garage,” he told us at a trunk-to-trunk meet-up in a sunny vineyard, smiling behind dark Ray-Bans.

     “You’d get a bottle of Krug out and you’d get rust flakes on your suit,” he chuckled. “But we were being named the best restaurant in the world.” Chef Thomas Keller took such a liking to him that André ended up running the legendary wine program at Per Se.

    Though working with the best chefs and pouring the most expensive bottles in existence, André always kept in mind the people who keep the fine-dining machine humming: the dishwashers, the delivery drivers, the barbacks, the gardes mangers. Setting out on his own, he decided to make wine those people would love—and could afford.
