    Visionary Producer Got There Early

Long before Andy Beckstoffer added Lake County holdings to his famed Napa lineup of To Kalon, George III, and Las Piedras, the region was untapped—and virtually unknown in the fine-wine world.

But in 1974, the visionary founders of Domaine Helena realized that, just 12 miles north of Calistoga, the mountain range that defines Napa’s eastern boundary shared the red volcanic soils and elevation of many great sites in Napa.

Now they’re making the best wines in their storied history. Under the direction of new owner and native Alsatian André Guéziec—who has taken the winery organic and invested in some of Lake County’s finest consultants—Domaine Helena produced a 2022 estate Cabernet that stands with any of its peers in Napa.

Sourced solely from Block 9 of their Mount St. Helena vineyard—named for its proximity to the towering Napa landmark—this gorgeous Cabernet was aged in 34% new French oak for a luxe touch. In this warm, dry year, the result is a wine with powerful flavors of dark plums alongside hints of cassis, licorice, and dash of cigar box. It’s a lot of wine for the money.
