An Auspicious Debut in A Landmark Vintage

It’s not often that you get to experience the first vintage in a changing of the guard in an old family domaine in France—and it’s one of the things that makes 2022 Domaine Beausejour Les Silex so exciting.

This is an auspicious leadoff vintage for brothers Arnaud and Albéric Lechat. In June of 2022, they left careers in other industries and purchased this 20-hectare farm from Philippe and Véronique Trotignon, whose family had owned it for generations.

The brothers picked a GREAT year to do it, and it shows in this wine’s 94-point score from Decanter. The 2022 vintage was one of the best in this part of the Loire Valley in 30 years, thanks to ideal conditions and low yields. While the first half of the year was very dry and warm, some freshening rain arrived just before harvest, giving the finished wines brightness and tension.

Domaine Beauséjour is in Noyers-sur-Cher, in the Touraine region, which lies west of the Sancerre zone. Touraine is named for the city of Tours, which is exactly halfway between Sancerre and Nantes on the coast. Touraine Sauvignon Blancs are some of the most reliable values from the Loire, and in vintages like 2022, they approach Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé in quality. Beauséjour’s 2022, which is named for their flinty [silex] soils, is a terrific expression of the terroir and the Sauvignon Blanc grape, and it’s the perfect warm-weather wine to pop with abandon!
