One of Burgundy’s Great Underdog Stories
We don’t know anyone more selective about what they drink than our Master Sommelier, Sur Lucero.
A Krug Cup–winner who trained his palate on the very best, his vote of approval carries a ton of weight at our judging panel. So when, after we unanimously approved the 2022 Sébastien Christophe Chablis, Sur asked to take home the rest of the bottle…
…well, that fact means as much to us as 95 points from a major publication.
That’s doubly true when it comes to Chablis, which is Sur’s go-to white wine.
Sébastien Christophe’s wines stud the lists at MICHELIN-starred restaurants worldwide, including Eleven Madison Park, making this rarity a STUNNING value.
Chablis is dripping with historical hierarchies and grand family estates that stretch back generations—and Sébastien Christophe belongs to none of those. He inherited a paltry half-hectare of vines in a pretty ordinary section of Chablis.
And Sébastien had merely above-average grit and skill, we wouldn’t be talking about him now. But he is one of the more remarkable winemakers in northern Burgundy, and he has transformed that small tract of land into some of the more coveted bottles of Chablis out there through sheer winemaking prowess plus endless amounts of hustle.
Wine Advocate declared this domaine is “fast emerging as a fine source of pure, racy Chablis,” and that remarkable rise speaks to the quality of the wines.
None offer the value that this AOC Chablis does. His Sébastien Christophe label is reserved for bottlings sourced from carefully curated vineyards—and they’re barely available in the US. These vines sit on the region’s famed Kimmeridgian marl and enjoy views of Grand Cru Les Blanchots and famed Premier Cru Montée de Tonnerre.
