How Do You Find Great Value in Bordeaux?
Catching an estate like Château Haut-Fontenelle on the way up makes all the legwork worth it.
What work? Well, to find great Bordeaux values, we’ll scour château rosters, keeping an eagle-eye out for the names of accomplished, in-demand consulting winemakers. We’re not talking about the famous properties like Classed Growths or even the Cru Bourgeois. We mean estates that have historically humble reputations—yet have shown a commitment to improving radically, costs be damned.
We do a lot of digging, as flashy winemakers don’t always advertise when they’re working for a currently-unknown producer, and we struck gold with Haut-Fontenelle.
Their consulting winemaker is none other than Hubert de Boüard, the legendary proprietor of Château Angélus—the Saint-Émilion star whose 2022 will set you back $450…on futures. De Boüard has always been a Bordeaux visionary, and he transformed his family estate from an under-performer to a 100-point, blue-chip collectible estate in just a decade, through force of will and technical expertise.
Tasting through Haut-Fontenelle’s lineup while we were in Bordeaux for En Primeur, we were very impressed—and flat-out blown away by how low their prices were. But the estate remains an insider secret, and their wines aren’t available in the US at all. The only thing to do was to bring them in ourselves, just for our members.
