2022 Casisano Rosso di Montalcino 750 ml

It used to be that consumers of Rosso di Montalcino were doing wineries a big favor, creating cash-flow while producers waited for their Brunellos to mature enough to release to the market. 

Things have changed.

Rosso di Montalcino, which comes from the same geographical boundaries as Brunello di Montalcino, is better than ever right now. Top producers have excellent terroir, they understand which fruit is destined for their Rossos instead of their Brunellos, and they farm those vines with early-drinking excellence in mind.   

Casisano’s 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is a phenomenal exemplar of this category. 

Surrounded by hundred-year-old forests and overlooking the famed Sant’Antimo valley, Casisano “is crafting delicious, ripe Brunellos with flair and finesse,” in the words of Italian-wine expert Kerin O’Keefe. Their Rosso di Montalcino comes from their vineyards in the hills to the southwest of Montalcino. 

Rosso di Montalcino does not have to be aged in oak as long as Brunello, so it tends to be brighter and more vibrant. But a warming climate is lending greater boldness, heft, and power to many Rosso di Montalcinos, which leads to wines like the 2022 Casisano. After a 12-day maceration, eight months in Slavonian oak casks, and six months in bottle, it’s a ready-to-drink winner that gives a ton of pleasure out of the gate.
