2022 Bibbiano Chianti Classico 750 ml
This bottle, which boasts an extremely impressive 93-point score from tough-scoring Wine Spectator, practically redraws the lines for a Tuscan red at its price. It’s a Chianti Classico of impressive depth and character, showing all the hallmarks of prime Sangiovese from this august estate in Castellina-in-Chianti: aromas of bright red fruit, dried roses, and lilac, with a juicy midpalate and a nice frame of chiseled tannins.

This Is Pure Chianti Classico
Tenuta di Bibbiano, established in 1865, is now in its fifth generation of family ownership. One of the oldest Chianti Classico estates owned by one family, it’s farmed organically by brothers Tommaso and Federico Marrocchesi Marzi—and while terroir is special, so is the human factor.
One of those factors is legendary consulting winemaker Giulio Gambelli, who looms so large in Tuscany that a prestigious winemaking award is named after him. He consulted for Bibbiano from 1942 (really!) to 2002, and his influence is a big reason why this wine is so special.
Gambelli, who passed away in 2012, was one of the greatest enological consultants Italy has ever produced, and he possessed one of the greatest Sangiovese palates in history. He was decades ahead of his time, arguing for 100% Sangiovese wines before it was fashionable. Gianfranco Soldera, the Montalcino icon for whom he consulted, once said, “Giulio tastes what others do not. There’s no one like him.” Luminaries like Biondi-Santi and Montevertine knew this too, and treasured his counsel.
Bibbiano’s Chianti Classico expresses both slopes of the 37-hectare estate—the southwest- and northeast exposures—featuring grapes frown in clay-lime and mixed stratified limestone soils. Despite the fact that the Chianti Classico DOCG permits up to 20% grapes like Colorino, Canaiolo Nero, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, this wine comprises 100% Sangiovese, a nod to the pioneering vision of Giulio Gambelli.
Harvest began in a beautiful and dry September, and after a 16-day fermentation, the wine aged for a full year in concrete tanks. It’s now drinking wonderfully: It’s bright and fresh, with a seriousness that you expect from a wine from such an important producer.
You simply can’t beat a Chianti Classico bargain like this one. Don’t miss this wine.
