What Can’t You Pair This With?

Winemaker Matt Nagy is behind some of Napa Valley’s most renowned wines. But the bottles he makes on his own—his ultimate labor of love—that’s Benevolent Neglect.

Matt and co-founder Ben Brenner don’t submit their wines for scores, but still, praise abounds. Their bottles are on the list at MICHELIN-three-star SingleThread and have earned plaudits from no less of an authority than Jancis Robinson MW.

It’s no surprise, considering Matt’s winemaking background. He’s worked alongside Thomas Rivers Brown, crafted 100-pointers at Seaver Vineyards, and spent time at Matthiasson, a leading proponent of employing a minimalist approach in the cellar. At Benevolent Neglect, his take on his exceptional grapes involves as little intervention as possible—hence the name.

Their Allora white blend is named for the Italian word that means…well, lots of things. It’s the ultimate gap-filler in conversation: You can use it to mean “so,” “well…,” “at that time,” and even just as a verbal pause. Walk around Rome and you’ll hear it hundreds of times.

Nagy crafted this wine to do the same thing at the table—you can pour this zesty white with nearly anything you’d want white wine with. It’s a blend of 47% Vermentino, a Sardinian grape that brings Sicilian lemon aromas, peachy flavors, and focused acidity. 38% Chardonnay provides green apple and stone-fruit flavors with a bit of mouthfeel.

He rounds it out with 15% Greco, a grape thought to be introduced to the area around Naples by the ancient Greeks and one that thrives in California sun. It adds a hint of chamomile and refreshing structure to this do-it-all bottle. We recommend you pour it with seafood, spaghetti al limone, or fennel-pollen-dusted roast chicken.
