The Best Sonoma Winemaker You’ve Never Heard Of?
The Mazzoni family has been in Alexander Valley for over a century, and, as a result, their vineyard holdings are some of the most coveted in Sonoma. They’ve become a go-to Chardonnay grower for top names in the region, like Jordan—and a slew of clients we aren’t allowed to mention.
But the family saves some of the very best fruit for their own Zialena label, which is crafted by the talented Mark Mazzoni, who worked for Littorai and Thomas Rivers Brown in his wine upbringing.
Mark grew up immersed in the wine business, AND he paid his dues along the way. As the fourth generation of the Mazzoni winemaking family in Geyserville, the ethic of hard work was instilled in him from a young age. It served him well in both the field and the cellar, managing vineyards for the likes of Littorai and Thomas Rivers Brown and making wine at places like Vineyard 29.
In short, Mark may well be the best Sonoma County winemaker you’ve never heard of—and he has his pick of the fruit from his family’s 100 acres of vines in Geyserville.
For premier fruit like this, only a white-glove, high-luxe treatment would be appropriate. The lusciously ripe, golden Chardonnay grapes are barrel-fermented—with each barrel hand-tended while it turns from juice into wine—then aged in French oak for a year and a half. Half of the barrels are new, a significant expense, and they impart polish and gorgeous spice, as well as blanched-almond flavors and beautiful richness on the palate.
