Obsession-Worthy Santa Barbara Intensity

Those are the type of wines that put Joey Tensley on the map, that made him a Wine Access favorite, and that have earned him 99- and 100-point scores. They’re what inspired critic Jeb Dunnuck to call Tensley wines “some of the greatest” out there for the money.

To taste exactly what makes Joey one of the great red-wine masters of our time, get a load of his 2021 All Blocks Estate Blend. With its concentrated dark fruit and towering structure—and boasting 93 points from Wine Advocate and 92–94 from Dunnuck—it’s an absolute wallop of a Châteauneuf-style red that Dunnuck said “brings the muscle.” 

The All Blocks Estate is one of Joey’s signature reds. It hails from the Tensley Vineyard, on the Los Olivos property that he and his family call home, and Colson Canyon, which Joey first laid eyes upon in 1997. He was the owner’s first client, and about six years ago, he and his wife Jennifer purchased the site, which covers 115 acres but has only sixteen acres of grapes. Because the elevation and rugged terrain render much of the site untameable, Joey believes that only three more acres have the potential to be planted. 

The 2021 All Blocks is a Southern Rhône-style blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre from these two stellar sites, and it bursts with the kind of character that made Joey a superstar. Rich ruby-purple and overflowing with blueberry, blackberry, and plum preserves underpinned by charcuterie, lavender, and freshly ground pepper, it’s robust, concentrated, and supple—the work of a true master.
