Time Was of the Essence for This Sancerre Stunner

Last year, one of our favorite importers sent us a near-panicked email.

“I just hung up the phone with Didier Raimbault,” he wrote. “Thanks to frost and hail in the vintage, my total allocation is 400 cases…down from 2000!”

And by the time the cases landed in our warehouse, it was clear that 2021 was going to be at least as scarce—another frost had cut yields by 50%. Time was going to be of the essence, so we made a request for samples of the next vintage to be overnighted from France the moment they were in bottle.

Our members will be glad we got to Roger and Didier Raimbault’s 2021 Belles Côtes Sancerre so quickly. You won’t find this anywhere else in the US—and once it’s in your glass, it’s clear it’s another MASTERFUL bottling from one of our favorite producers in the Loire.

Cut through with a lively vein of Sancerre chalkiness, 2021’s cool-vintage qualities come through with a rippling acidity that finishes with a touch of fresh herbs. This is as classic as Sancerre gets—our only complaint is the paucity of supply.

The father-and-son team of Roger and Didier Raimbault are the present-day heirs to a 400-year family history of winegrowing in the village of Verdigny, in the heart of the Sancerre region. Together, they work their 43 acres of vineyards, producing Sancerre that will absolutely blow you away with its bold, expressive flavors.

The 2021 vintage in Sancerre created quintessential, nervy wines. The Raimbaults picked at perfect maturity, giving a fruit-driven white with the bite and complexity to keep you coming back for sip after sip.
