    Destined for Greatness

Philip Holbrook was destined to become a great winemaker.

As the assistant winemaker at Nickel & Nickel, he has a hand in some of Napa Valley’s most impeccable single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons. And as the grandson of Margrit Mondavi, he grew up absorbing wine culture in the greater Mondavi clan. He even honed his craft at both Robert Mondavi Winery and with Carlo and Dante Mondavi at RAEN.

We’re thrilled to share a phenomenal bottle from his proud new project: The 2021 Revik Cabernet Sauvignon. A dark, rich, voluminous Cabernet grown primarily on a plot of vines that Philip planted himself in rocky Coombsville, it comes from a 2021 Napa vintage Wine Spectator scored an eye-catching 97 points.

90% of this wine comes from Saphi Vineyard, which is named after Philip's sister, Sasha, and himself. He grew up in Coombsville and knows the hillsides like the native he is. A little over a decade ago, he planted this plot with Cabernet Sauvignon clone 337, which is known for producing small berries and intense, ageworthy wines.

Philip dry-farms the vineyard, and his commitment to organic farming and meticulous selection is evident in every drop of this Cabernet. It also incorporates a bit from the coveted—and tiny, at just two acres—organic- and dry-farmed Lilac Vineyard in St. Helena.

The winery's first vintage was 2016, and Philip opted not to release any 2017 because it wasn’t up to his standards. This speaks volumes about his commitment to making only great wine—and that spare-no-expense, demand-the-best attitude extends to a full 22-month élévage in 55% new French oak from top coopers.
