The Mechanic who Went Biodynamic
It doesn’t get more “artisan” than a lone vigneron, pruning his Gamay vineyard in solitude on a cold February morning, tossing the canes into his wheelbarrow-brazier to burn. You’ll also find him working in the depths of the cellar unassisted, racking barrels and making wine by hand. Ludovic Montginot is a one-man band like this, driven by his passion for the land and biodynamic farming.
This former mechanic has just three hectares he tends—and among them is one of Beaujolais’ most important crus: Morgon’s world-class Côte du Py hillside. Imagine the granitic verve of Côte-Rotie combined with the heady aromatics of a fabulous Chinon. Decomposed schist soils, a south-facing slope, and a preponderance of old vines combine to create impressively concentrated Gamay, with surprising structure and layers of flavor. Some even say that, over time, Côte du Py wines can start to taste like the contemplative red Burgundies made just north of here.
If we had to pick a favorite Beaujolais cru, it would have to be Morgon, and it’s because of spicy, focused Gamays like this one. The nose reveals a charming bouquet of red berries, such as strawberries and raspberries, with hints of wildflowers, crushed violets, and a touch of earthiness. This wine exudes freshness and purity, with a lively acidity that enlivens the senses. It’s a tiny-production, handmade, biodynamically farmed wine that deserves a place in your cellar, where it will improve for at least a decade.
