A Bona Fide Legend of California Wine

Helen Keplinger is one of the most decorated and accomplished winemakers in Napa Valley: She’s had massive success making wines for others, but no bottles capture her magic better than the ones bearing her own label.

Founded on Rhône varieties and utilizing her extensive experience in Napa Valley as well as Spain’s Priorat region, Helen’s Keplinger wines use impeccable grapes from a carefully selected array of vineyards. She crafts some of the most delicious, unique, and inspired red wines made in California—and she’s at the top of her game right now.

“The wines have rocketed into the stratosphere,” Antonio Galloni recently wrote in Vinous, while bestowing her the title of Winemaker of the Year. He continued:

“The wines were so breathtaking I tasted them again in my office a few weeks later just to be sure. As often happens with great wines when they are taken out of physical context, a more clinical setting actually allows them to shine even more brightly. My initial impressions were confirmed, and then some. Her 2021s are quite simply sensational across the board.”

And while Galloni might think that “they are all magnificent,” a highlight for us is the 2021 Solitaire Syrah, which is a brand-new bottling she made from a wind-buffeted site in the Napa side of Carneros. The cool climate and constant wind create extra-thick grape skins and provide outstanding freshness, allowing Helen to delay harvesting until late in the season. The result is exceptional power and density, with a kaleidoscope of dark-purple fruit. It’s perfectly balanced and a hedonist’s delight.
