The Next Household Name
Hayes Family Wines is a Barossa newcomer anchored by the remarkable Stone Well Vineyard, which was first planted in the 1940s. This precious parcel of land was settled after WWII by Italian immigrants who had worked at Penfolds. They planted Penfolds cuttings, and now ancient vines thrive in the challenging terrain, where the sparse topsoil gives way to limestone, white rock, and clay. This forces the vines to struggle for survival, producing fruit of extraordinary concentration and character.
Hayes is led by Andrew Seppelt, a legacy Barossan with wine in his blood. Seppelt was winemaker at the legendary Torbreck estate, and his expertise is particularly evident in Block 9. Only 125 cases of this certified organic were made: It’s a miracle we found it, and a good thing that James Suckling’s crew did too, as the wines ended up at the top of their Barossa Shiraz listings.
Hayes has been around for just a decade, and they’ve held a coveted five-star rating from James Halliday's Wine Companion—the country's most respected wine guide—from the very start. The 2021 Shiraz Block 9 was aged for 20 months in a mix of new and second-year French oak hogshead barrels, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
